I say that something to cook with is just as important as something to cook If you are on the run you can usually forage up some greens that will keep you going and if it tastes a little better along the way even better.

My apartment has an Electric stove
In the event of no power I have a Korean style Butane burner and a case of butane for it. Sure you can get the coleman branded stuff at bass pro for $5 a can but most larger asian food stores have a 3 pack of butane for About $5 with the stoves costing about $20-30

I for the bug out bags I also Picked up some of the old sweedish mess kits with the Trangia alcohol stove after a post on ZS. They run on denatured alcohol that you can get at any store that sells paint, And even less known as the little yellow bottles of HEET that you can buy at the auto parts store. We have run both in our stoves to ensure that HEET really is Alcohol and both stoves running side by side both boiled at the same time with the same quality of flame.

In the event of a sudden catering emergency before I had all the fancy crap above I had a case of sterno left over from my wedding. The idea was that I could use a coffie can for the stove windscreen like a hobo stove and cook what I needed on it. I still have the sterno but now I just use them inplace of the Trangia with the sweedish messkit.

As with all burning flames they should not be used unattended or in a completely enclosed area due to the risk of carbon monoxide.

How are ya planning on cooking/boiling water.

All of my preps can be eaten w/o cooking OR adding water. I can if I want to though, on my propane stove. I am a 1 month prepper. Here in Dallas that's a doable amount budget-wise and whatever! Smile I live a mile from a huge lake. Ijust need and easy way to get it back to the house. I'm trying to find a truckbed mount water tank I can afford!!

I have an MSR Dragonfly stove that I use for camping. One of the things I need to stock up on this summer is a bunch of white gas for it. However, it will also run on auto gas, and I have another fuel nozzle that lets it run on diesel, kerosene, or jet fuel.

Along with food preparation you should also take the time to store some goodies. I have always had a box of m&m's stored. The smallest things that bring joy to someone can make the difference of life and death in a situation. There is no point in just having the necessities when there are thousands of free coupons out there, that would cover things like candy and pop. They aren't needed for survival but sanity is.
