Does anyone shave with a straight razor anymore? I really hate the throwaway shaver heads, and I think it would be way cool to go back to a more sustainable way of shaving since you buy it once and then just keep it sharp. Does anyone here do this, and have suggestions on how to get hold of one? Is this the worst idea ever? Are there any companies that manufacture new straight razors?

How To: Shave with a Straight Razor
Shaving with a straight razor as opposed to a safety razor allows you to adjust the angle of the razor to the specific contours of your face and neck. Some say it provides a much closer and longer-lasting shave than safety razors or electric models. Getting the closest personal shave requires a bit of practice, but you’ll soon find shaving with a straight razor will become a simple pleasure you’ll look forward to.

1. Make sure your face is clean before you start shaving. Wash with a mild soap and pat dry. If you wish, you may then cover your face with a hot towel (either one that has been steamed or run under hot water and then wrung out) for a few minutes. The goal is to remove dirt and oils that can dull the razor and make shaving more difficult.
2. Work up a good lather using a glycerin-based shaving soap. (Standard shaving gels and foams are not recommended for use with a straight razor.) Lather your face and neck well.
3. Open the razor so that the blade is pointing down and the handle is up. This is considered the standard position for straight-razor shaving.
4. Some manufacturers recommend shaving with the hair growth; others tell you to shave each area once up and once down. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin, you can experiment with either method and which gives you the desired close shave.
5. Shave in the following order: sideburns and cheekbones, sides of the neck, middle of the neck, upper and lower lips and lastly, the chin. Shaving in this order allows the lather to penetrate areas with thicker hair longer.
6. When learning to use a straight razor, it is recommended that you shave with the blade at a 90° angle. As you master the process, you can adjust the blade to your liking, up to a 30° angle.
7. When you have finished shaving, rinse your face with cool water and pat with a mild astringent or shave balm. This helps soothe the skin and prevent irritation.
8. Rinse the razor in clear water and allow to dry before closing and storing.

DO:

* Rinse your razor with water often while shaving to remove hair and lather as it builds up on the razor. This will ensure a closer shave.
* Strop the razor before and after each shave to maintain the razor edge. Those with thicker hair may need to strop a few times during a shave to keep the blade sharp.
* Go slowly. It will take some time to develop your own style of shaving. Don’t be discouraged if you need to re-lather and go back over some of the same areas while learning. Even the most accomplished barbers have to do this at times.

DON’T

* Never move the razor in a position parallel to the blade, as it will cut you.
* Never tap or hit your razor on the side of the sink, wash basin, etc. This could permanently damage the blade and make it dangerous to use.
