If you live in a small condo or apt, will you have a generator? If so, what size is best and how would you vent it??? _________________ "If this ain't a mess, it'l do 'till one shows up" |

generators are PITA to me, their noisy(attracts attention), they need gasoline(shortages expected?)and for what they provides, they are not worth the trouble... i would go first with solar panels, or a wind powered generator ("éolienne" in french) _________________ you'll never feel more alive than on the edge of death |

I tend to agree with the comemnts about generators in an urban environment. If you had a ground floor apartment or a blacony i guess you could run it there, but they eat a lot of fuel, and are very noisy.
Solar panels sound like a great diea, but the limited surface area most people have available to them makes them a lot less of an energy collector than you might think. Wind power for apartment dwellers is not even remotely practical.
Besides, what do you need electricity for? To watch TV?
For lighting, get some hand cranked LED flashlights. _________________ Bob |

got your point there... electricity is a luxury ressource in SHTF scenario, but if you can get it, why spit on it??At least to keep the cmputer running, so you can see your files, or your downloaded videoes, or just listen music... if i need electricity, it's only for my computer. _________________ you'll never feel more alive than on the edge of death |

I was thinking more along the lines of running a fan or a heater or a food dehydrator if you have meat from your fridge going bad. _________________ "If this ain't a mess, it'l do 'till one shows up" |

My suggestion would be to get a rechargable battery pack, like the ones sold for jump starting cars, and a small inverter.
Keep the thing charged up and you have a temporary source of power. It won't last long but ieven the small one I have gives you power for quite sometime if you don't waste it.
In a shtf situation, a fan is probably something you can live without, and an electric heater is a terrible waste of energy,. Get a small propane heater and a couple of propane tanks. _________________ Bob |

I saw a Honda generator at a street fair recently and was amazed at how quite it was I didn't realize it was running until I was about 8' away I looked at the Honda site and was impressed(sry don't know how to and the linky thing ) if you could rig up a footlocker sized box with some insulation, computer fans and a length of dryer hose I think it would work. For the people that live in areas that have fairly steady wind a wind turbine would be awesome there was a company that was designing a tower not like the current ones that use some kind of prop but their model placed the fins/vanes in a vertical arrangement imagine a 55gal oil drum with slots cut in running from top to bottom it had a reasonably small footprint and would work no matter which direction the wind was blowing. |
