All these "mountain House" type foods are ok as long as you don't have to add water. Your water supply,in an Urban SHTF situation, is more important than having a years worth of food stored up. Canned foods that are already packed in water will stretch your fresh water supply!!

Mel Tappen used to alwys say one of the best ways to store food is as body fat. He said that way I always have 27 pounds of sustenance which would last him a month!!!! Laughing

+10, i was talking about it just the other day, you'll save a lot of trouble by getting ready to eat instead of the'just add water" stuff...

Does it make any real difference if part of your water supply is in canned food as opposed to stored up as water? It weighs the same and takes up the same amount of space regardless.

but you don't have to prepare it before... just a question on the topic, would you put spaghettis in your food supplys? if so, when those noodles are ready, what will you do with the water they were boiling in??? of course, you can use it in a soup or something else, but you'll save lot of trouble by getting other things that dosen't require preps.

Boiling pasta or potatoes is generally a bad idea. In my opinion, the best way to conserve water in cooking is to stew. Everybody loves stew with potato, rice in gumbo, and noodles in beef stroganoff.

Pasta is a great carb! and while I am not advocating eating pasta frequently is does offer a change of pace.

You can bring the water to a boil, put in pasta and turn the heat off to let the pasta sit in hot water, with a stir or two, and cook.

The water can then be used to bathe in. the starch is a skin softener!

the water can be flavored with a bullion and then the pasta cooked in it. the water can be used for preparing rice. Adding to the ingredients to make bread.

If never goes to waste. I prefer to purchase 'angel hair pasta' because it cooks much faster.

Use some of those dehydrated vegetables in the pasta water to make another meal.

Of course the water can always be filtered and drank.

Do you have to pressure can them because of the meat content and lack of salt/sugar/acid?
