Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I was wondering what kinds of things you do at the shooting range to practice your marksmanship. It seems simple when you say that you're going to spend some time at the range, but what exactly do you mean? How many rounds do you put into a target before you switch out to a new one, and why? How fast/slow do you go? How much time do you spend in one range date? How many rounds do you fire? Are there any other features of your marksmanship training that make it what it is? If we all post what we do, we could have a really good discussion about training on a forum where most of the threads are about hardware.
My pistol routine:
I shoot at a public range (henges) that has enforced cease fires every 10ish minutes so that we can go out and change targets. Because of this, shooting sessions are divided up into 10 minute segments. During one set, I'll usually put up 4 targets. First, I shoot the top two targets, alternating between mags. I try to keep a steady "shoot, two, three, four" rhythm. This helps my marksmanship by practicing reacquiring a good sight picture after a shot and making sure I stay consistent by looking at groupings. When the range officer announces that we have 1 or 2 minutes left in the set, I switch to the bottom targets and put a magazine in each. The bottom ones are my pure marksmanship targets where I take all the time I need to line up a really good shot. At the end of the set, I have usually put about 4 mags in each top target and 1 mag in each bottom one. I feel that this routine helps me better myself as a beginning shooter by focusing on both pure marksmanship as well as shooting that more closely emulates what one would do in the real world.
Another note about this routine is that, because of time constraints, it's better to have someone loading mags for you while you shoot. I do this by shooting with another person that I can take turns with since the range I use allows 2 people to be in a booth at once (but only one person shooting).
Criticism is welcome, and please post your own training routines so that we can compare and discuss.
Cost restraints have severely limited range time. When I do go, I go to an indoor range with motorized target caddys so there are no time limits on shooting strings. I always practice action shooting by always starting at the ready position and raising the weapon to fire a double tap with both eyes open and focused on the target. I learned to practice this way during my competition days and it has served me well. _________________ "If this ain't a mess, it'l do 'till one shows up"

unit from the weak side shoulder. I have almost no need to practice with the pistol, or with the rifle from the strong side shoulder. I've done those things for nearly 40 years, 1/4 million live rds, and a million more dry snaps, so there is a well programmed set of neural pathways present for those long-practiced things.
