When another site links to your site, the search engines see this as a vote to your site, thus giving your site more credibility and moving it higher on the search results page. The more links from other sites to your site, the more credibility you get from the search engines. If you get links from authority sites, sites that are trusted and already ranked high on the search engines, this will help your rankings more than if your site is linked from low-ranking sites. Another important thing to note is that links coming from sites relevant to your topic will help more than links coming from non-related sites. For example, if you own a site about gardening, and all of your inbound links are coming from automotive sites, it will not help increase your rankings as much as if your inbound links came from other gardening sites.
