I just found out that my school has a rifle team. Should I join it? Will it make me better at shooting? It sounds like they use air rifles as well as "smallbore rifles" which sounds like black powder .17HMR. Has anyone done or seen competitive rifle matches and could tell me what happens?

Smallbore usually means .22lr caliber. Yes, join if you can. Any instruction in shooting is a good thing. I never had the chance in school, so I taught myself thru competing at gun clubs over the past 35 years.
