Forums and blog rings are a great way to start link building. Look for other sites/blogs relevant to yours and start commenting on their posts. Most of the time there is a field to enter your web site when you make a comment and that would give you some exposure to your site. If you can, try to build relationships with these people and propose link exchanges with the smaller ones. A link exchange is when you and another site owner agree to link to each others site, which is a win-win situation for both parties. Submit your web site to directories, and submit your articles to article directories. The point of all this is to get traffic to your site, and if you have good content people will start linking to your site automatically.
