Users will soon only be able to share newly purchased content between two consoles

Sony Corp. (TYO:6758) gave gamers good news in August, trimming $50 off the price of its PlayStation 3 console. That price cut propelled the console to its highest quarterly sales since its 2006 launch, but also propelled the company's consumer electronics division to a net loss.

Now Sony has more news for current and prospective PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Pocket (PSP) customers, and this time it's not so good.

For all games purchased on the PlayStation Network (PSN) after Nov. 18, users will only be able to access their content from a maximum of two consoles. The move is ostensibly designed to cut down on illicit content sharing in group atmospheres like college campuses. While most users don't have more than two consoles, we'd imagine this would affect a handful of customers, e.g. people with two consoles at home and a third console at a vacation home.

Existing content can be shared between more devices.

Sony describes the process of registering your device, writing in the PSN blog:

PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management website where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC.

For more details on how to activate/deactivate the devices, please read this guide or contact consumer services.
