Hello everyone!
Let me just say "wow". We had some pretty bad flash-flooding in our river-town earlier this summer, and there were some things that happened that made me realize exactly how ill prepared we are up here to deal with something like that.
It opened my eyes, and now I'm playing "catch up". I have been lurking here all day, and I'm just so impressed with all the knowledge. I'm particularly interested in Urban survival though.
Anyway, here's my question: I am starving for info on making my home prepared to handle any sort of disaster we might face around here (mostly floods, looting, ect), and I'm wondering if you guys can post a list of any books that you've bought from Amazon, or really- ANY materials that you've found helpful.
I'm not afraid of the cost- so post away. I have only made one purchase so far, and it's been fabulous. I bought it from a newsletter that I got via email a while ago (survive in place), and I feel like I already have tripled my preparedness level.
So please- ANYTHING you guys have- books, DVDs- or even forums.
I'm retired up here, so I have PLENTY of time for reading. Thanks SO much everyone, for taking the time to become prepared citizens. I believe people like YOU are what makes this country so great.
since I don't live where it floods I am not able to offer any tried and true suggestions.
I would think that coating cans in a thin coat of wax might keep the cans from rusting, getting a vacuum sealer might help cellophane packages from getting wet. Perhaps using rubber maid totes and sealing with a silicone bead, sealing the lid to the container... be sure if you use other then rubbermaid you check for manufacturing holes under the handles... be sure to seal them too.
After watching Katrina, if I lived in a flood area, I certainly would have a door in my attic.. large enough to get out and get my blow up raft out! I might consider storing supplies up there in the attic but then it would have to be really insulated.
One can always move to higher ground? I think I would build a house of steal... garage on the ground floor and two more floors above that with a tall roof/attic.
