I'm of the opinion, think ahead. Meaning, what happens if you nuke a bad guy? Is your town/city/state pro gun? If so, then I'd go with a AR and appropriate ammo [TAP, etc.]. If you have an anti-gun county attorney/prosecuting attorney, I'd probably be looking at a 12ga. pump action shotgun and #4 buck for bumps in the night. YMMV, and just my opinion, but the old saying of I'd rather be judged by 12, than carried by six, may need to be weighed against our current anti-gun gov't employees. _________________ eeennnnnnt...... eeennnnnnt...... eeennnnnnt......

That's so true!!! You have to know your environment...in more ways than one!!!
well for a condo or apt. how about a keltec 2000 rifle and a glock in 9mm or .40 cal.im thinking pistole for across the room and rifle across apartment.then you only have one caliber to store ammo for and mags are interchangable.

From the other forums I browse. that seems to be a popular combo!!! Add a .22 (10/22) for Urban game and you'll be good!! _________________ "If this ain't a mess, it'l do 'till one shows up"
Everyone likes the AR/AK/12 pump.... the fact of the matter is, if a goblin gets inside your dwelling with you, and you are armed with a long gun, they have just as much gun to wrestle with as you do. The 7.62x39 ammo is a serious overpenetration risk, as is a 12 guage with buckshot let alone anything heavier. 5.56 tends to break up more readily but is still certainly a concern. If you do not honestly believe that you will take out, regularly use, clean and maintain any magazine fed firearm that relies on a spring to advance ammunition, you would be well served with a revolver. You lose most of your cool factor in many eyes, but it will go bang more reliably than any auto left loaded and forgotten. A .357 magnum can be loaded with .38 special for practice and acclimation to shooting, then reloaded with nasty, 125 grain JHP .357 ammo for keeping house. If you have children in the home, there is nowhere they won't find it, hiding wont do. Secure storage with rapid access is something you will have to determine for your surroundings.

In that situation, I would want to stay away from long arms since that length would be cumbersome in a close quarters situation. My first choices for home defense would be an 18in 12 gauge pump or a pistol. If I went with a rifle, it would be a carbine chambered in 9mm with a 9mm pistol as a sidearm.
Homma, I totally agree with your point on revolvers. If you aren't going to invest the time to get proficient and maintain a semi-auto, including practicing malfunction drills to the point that they're second nature, you should use a double action revolver since all you have to remember is how to aim.

I agree. At the absolute worst case in a high-density Urban Enviro, I think a .357 lever gun and revolver would be at the top of the power reqm'ts _________________ "If this ain't a mess, it'l do 'till one shows up"
Thanks guys, I think Goblin may have the perfect combo. The .357 lever gun/revolver is going to be reliable as a hammer, relatively high cap, ammunition commonality makes grabbing the wrong box a non-issue, and if it takes more than some hot .357 loads out of a 16 inch barrel you are having a bad day. With any gun though, one has to be realistic. No one person can clear a home safely, if there are no children or loved ones who are more important than life, take a deffensive position, cover any route of entry, and hope God likes you... If you have more than yourself to care for, what is safe gets tossed out the window... really hope God likes you

and the probability of such things is that you won't have one when you need it. In fact, if you dont always ccw your pistol while at home, which is perfectly legal anywhere except NYC or Trenton, NJ, you won't have your pistol when it's needed, either. Defensive guns are like fire insurance. You can't know when the insurance/gun might be needed, it has to be "in force" at all times, or it wont be there when it's needed. Nearly all attackers "back down" at just the sight of your (ready) gun, and half of those who don't will back down at a shot that misses them. So the "power" of the shotgun or rifle is irrelevant, until shtf. The pistol's ease of ccw is what makes it best for home defense. You don't answer the door, or put out your pets or mail or garbage while carrying a shotgun, but you can easily be attacked when you are outside. You can easilly ccw a pistol while doing those things, however, and nobody need know about it but you.
